Frog of the Day wouldn't be possible without AmphibiaWeb and CalPhotos.

On 18 March 2026, CalPhotos began requiring CAPTCHA for access to their site, in order to prevent spam from robots. While Frog of the Day was one of these robots, it had minimal impact, as it stored all scraped data in a cache file, thus only making one web request daily. While this may have been a direct violation of CalPhotos' terms of use, it brings me great sadness to see my project, the Frog of the Day, die so unexpectedly.

Frog of the Day was created, not only to show frgo.org users a different frog species every day, but to bring awareness to the beauty and natural diversity of the order Anura I hoped that Frog of the Day could create a community of people willing to support the frogs, truly understanding their dire situations. Many fans know that Frog of the Day not only displayed a frog's photo, name (vernacular and scientific), but also its IUNC redlist status. This status identifies how endangered a frog species is, having a potentially moving effect upon users of my site.

But Frog of the Day's legacy is not over. Frog of the Day will continue to exist, serving all of the information that we can still provide to our users. We will continue making requests to CalPhotos in the hopes that they may one day open up their service to the community once more, and allow Frog of the Day to reach its true potential.

Until that day, which we hope should come soon, we hold out hope so that it should become a reality.
